Tips for Parents of Tweens and Teens

1. Keep the lines of communication open between you and your child.
·       Learn to listen
·       Empathize with their feelings
·       Discuss matters and questions they are dealing with
·       Provide positive assurance
·       Share ideas
·       Be aware of what your child is looking at on the internet and also what kind of video games they are playing
·       Find opportunities to talk: have dinner together and talk in the car
2.  Maintain awareness of your child’s health
·       This age group should be getting about 9 hours of sleep a night
·       Eat a well-balanced diet
·       Be aware of their changing hormones; this fluctuation can often cause moodiness
·       Exercise (this comes in many forms, for instance, a school football team, gym membership, or even playing outside!)
3.  Maintain a strong bond with your child
·       Spend time together, for example, family outings or play a family game together
·       Provide guidance for your child and explain why there are rules (to keep them safe)
·       Set reasonable limits
·       Enforce the rules
·       Take a deep breath and remain calm
